Sketching and Painting the Scottish Mountains

John Mitchell rsw

The Buchaille Etive Mor from the ski centre car park. Pen and wash.

Ever since I first started hill walking and climbing in the late 1970’s I took a sketch book with me onto the hill.

Yes I know it’s much easier to take a photograph, and I’ve made of lot of them too, but there is something about a sketch that brings back more memories and provides a more personal record. I also think that sketching makes one look closer at the subject matter than peering through a camera viewfinder

I’ve taken my sketch books to the Lake District, the Alps and the Atlas, but mainly to the Scottish highlands and islands.

There are any number of suitable sketchbooks on the market – just check out your local art store. Remember that a small A5 book can be drawn across two pages to allow a larger image.

I like to use a fine nibbed felt tip pen and, again, there are many of these on the market. The beauty of them is that they carry their own ink supply around with them so no ink spillages in the rucksack!
